FEET WASHING BRINGS UNITY IN BRAZIL
Cancao Nova in Sao Paulo is one of many thriving charismatic communities in the Catholic Church, where people intentionally live together to express their unity in Christ.
Tony Palmer, who leads a Celtic Community in the Anglican Church, was there several weeks ago as part of an ecumenical delegation that was invited to speak and minister at a national Catholic Charismatic Conference that drew 60,000 people.
He reports: "My words have no power to transmit what took place there. It was mindblowing to hear the bishops share their experiences of being baptized in the Holy Spirit and praying for the infilling afresh.”
"When it was our time to speak, we (the ecumenical delegation) decided to wash the feet of the Catholic Church in Brazil. This set the meeting on fire with a love that was actually tangible.
We asked for forgiveness on behalf of our non-Roman brothers and sisters for our lack of love. After we served them, they shocked us by getting on their knees, washing our feet and kissing them! No words can express the historic influence this may have on the Church in Brazil. And it was televised live to 83 different countries, including the Vatican.”
