Being a lover of precious art, a wealthy man was attracted to a shop window. Here some great art treasures were being displayed. Amongst them, he saw a beautiful painting of the crucifixion, which brought back forgotten memories of his early Christian childhood days. Suddenly the man became aware of somebody standing by his side. He looked and saw a poor looking boy of about thirteen years of age, who said: "That's the Lord Jesus, sir, on the CROSS. He was a Good Man but the bad men, sir, nailed Him to the cross and crowned Him in mockery, with those terrible looking thorns on His Beloved Head." "You know sir", he went on: "He died for us and all our sins, while His mother, with a broken heart, looked on to see what they were doing to her beloved Son." The man felt a lump rise to his throat as the boy continued: "He died a terribly cruel death, and over yonder, sir, they buried Him." The man could stand it no longer. It was becoming too real for him as the boy spoke and he remembered all too well what his mother had taught him about Jesus. With tears in his eyes he turned away. Yes, he too had once known the Way but through position and money, it had come to mean nothing to him. Suddenly he felt a tug at his coat-tail. Turning round, he saw that the poor boy who had been telling him the story of Jesus was looking very tenderly up to him and then anxiously said: "Excuse me sir, don't weep. I forgot to tell you that He rose again and lives for evermore, so please sir, don't weep anymore." [From: Better than Butter by Herbert Stein] |
